Professor Michel Rossi passed away on Monday, November 26, 2018, surrounded by his family and friends, following an illness that he faced with the courage that his loved ones knew him for, right to the end. He is an exceptional man who has left us.

He began his career in radiology, specializing in the study of hydroxyapatite crystals by X-ray diffraction. He retained a lifelong passion for mineralogy, a discipline he mastered with the ease of a specialist and shared with the passion of an amateur. It was also at this time that he began his teaching career, with an infectious enthusiasm and pedagogical innovations that went against the grain of mass education and would take 30 years to be recognized as relevant.

A qualified biophysicist and nuclear medicine specialist (1975), he took advantage of his cooperation in Morocco to set up the first nuclear medicine department in Rabat, where he trained a whole generation of practitioners with whom he maintained close ties, marked by the boundless respect and gratitude of his students, for whom he was and will remain the "Grand Chef".

Returning to Montpellier in 1979, he was instrumental in structuring nuclear medicine in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, creating from scratch the departments of the Gui de Chauliac and Lapeyronie hospitals at Montpellier University Hospital, which he headed until his retirement. He then played a very active role in setting up the departments of the Montpellier Cancer Center and the Nîmes and Perpignan hospitals, sending his students there and helping them to develop these structures. Professor Rossi was also very active in the management of the Montpellier University Hospital, accompanying and often initiating the modernization of this establishment.

He then devoted himself to managing the Jardin des plantes de Montpellier, with the same energy as always. A keen botanist and historian, he spared no effort to make possible extensive renovation work (Martins Greenhouses, Orangery) and return to the public "this ancient garden where all people with thoughts, worries and monologues descend towards evening" (Paul Valery).

As the local "boss" of nuclear medicine, Professor Rossi was remarkably efficient, managing his teams with great elegance and unfeigned empathy. As a matter of principle, he knew how to give his new colleagues his full confidence, preferring to motivate rather than coerce, less imposing than convincing. This management style, which he mastered to perfection, enabled him to create close-knit, efficient, competent and responsible teams. Above all else, Professor Rossi wanted his staff to experience the ever-renewed pleasure of working together. This culture of service, which he instilled throughout his career, lives on at Montpellier University Hospital and perpetuates his memory.

Beyond these professional aspects, Professor Rossi resembled a renaissance humanist. His fields of interest were of unprecedented variety, and always approached with free, original thought and profound culture. Morocco, of course, in the history of its peoples and its geography, mineralogy and botany, as we have already mentioned, entomology, but also world history, and more particularly that of the ancient Mediterranean and the Hellenistic period, biology and physics, cinema, and especially editing, which he practiced with his childhood friend Claude Maurin and whose productions won several awards...

Professor Rossi has left us a few short stories published on the web, a fine book dedicated to the Montpellier Plant Garden, and above all, for those who knew him, a way of being in the world and to others which he exemplified throughout his life. It's a rich and demanding heritage that those close to him must do their utmost to preserve in his memory.
