Articles by Mr. Rossi

Professor Michel Rossi passed away on Monday, November 26, 2018, surrounded by his loved ones, following an illness that he faced with the courage his loved ones knew him for, right until the end. An exceptional man has left us.

An electronics engineer, doctor of medicine, and nuclear medicine specialist, he began his career in radiology, specializing in the study of hydroxyapatite crystals using X-ray diffraction. Throughout his life, he retained a passion for mineralogy, a discipline he mastered with the ease of a specialist and knew how to share with the enthusiasm of an amateur. It was also during this period that he began his teaching career, bringing infectious enthusiasm and pedagogical innovations that went against the grain of mass education—innovations that would take 30 years to be recognized as relevant.

After earning his agrégation in biophysics and nuclear medicine (1975), he took advantage of a cooperative program in Morocco to establish the country’s first nuclear medicine department in Rabat and to train an entire generation of practitioners there. He maintained close ties with them, marked by boundless respect and gratitude from his students, for whom he was—and will always be—the “Grand Chef.”

Upon his return to Montpellier in 1979, he played a key role in establishing nuclear medicine in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, building from the ground up the departments at the Gui de Chauliac and Lapeyronie hospitals within the Montpellier University Hospital (CHU), which he directed until his retirement. He then played a very active role in setting up the departments at the Montpellier Cancer Center, the hospitals in Nîmes and Perpignan, sending his students and staff there to help develop these facilities. Professor Rossi was also very active on the administrative board of the Montpellier University Hospital, supporting and often spearheading the modernization of the institution.

He then devoted himself to directing the Jardin des Plantes in Montpellier, with the same energy as always. Passionate about botany and history, he spared no effort to make extensive renovation projects possible (the Martins Greenhouses, the Orangery) and to restore to the public “that ancient garden where all people with thoughts, worries, and soliloquies descend as evening falls” (Paul Valéry).

As the local “head” of nuclear medicine, Professor Rossi was remarkably effective, managing his teams with great grace and genuine empathy. He knew, from the outset and as a matter of principle, how to place his full trust in his new colleagues, preferring to motivate rather than coerce, and to convince rather than impose. This management style, which he mastered to perfection, enabled him to build close-knit, efficient, competent, and responsible teams. Above all else, Professor Rossi prioritized his desire to see his colleagues take ever-renewed pleasure in working together. This culture of service, which he instilled throughout his career, endures at the Montpellier University Hospital and keeps his memory alive.

Beyond these professional aspects, Professor Rossi resembled a Renaissance humanist. His areas of interest were incredibly diverse and always approached with free and original thinking, as well as profound erudition. Listing them is like a Prévert-style inventory: Morocco, of course, in terms of the history of its peoples and its geography, mineralogy and botany—as we’ve already mentioned—entomology, but also world history, particularly that of the ancient Mediterranean and the Hellenistic period, biology and physics, cinema, and especially film editing, which he practiced with his childhood friend Claude Maurin and whose productions won numerous awards…

Professor Rossi leaves us with some writings published online, a beautiful book dedicated to the Montpellier Botanical Garden, and above all—for those who knew him—a way of being in the world and with others that he exemplified throughout his life. It is a rich and demanding legacy that his loved ones must do their best to preserve, in his memory.
